Windows Live Messenger 8.5: incompatible?

Hi there

I'd appreciate some help.

I've recently downloaded and installed Windows Live Messenger 8.5. I'm using it with Jaws 7.00.135. When i'm focused in a conversation window, I don't get any of the typing sounds when a contact is typing a message. Also, when I hit insert and page down to read if someone's typing, or when the last message was received, Jaws tells me that the status bar is invisible. Now i've tried, under tools, checking and unchecking the standard and formatting toolbars, but they don't make the status bar visible. If I route Jaws to PC, I can tell, with the Jaws cursor, if someone's typing or not. I just don't understand why I can't see the status bar in the normal way, and why i'm not getting any typing sounds when a contact is writing. Is this a compatibility issue? Has anybody else had, and resolved it? Are there Jaws scripts available to sort the problem?

Thanks in advance

FM

It's because you're using old scripts. If you want I could email you mine, but they don't read messages automatically for some reason, even with the option checked in verbosity, and I didn't do anything to them, it just stopped working. These are default fs scripts.

HTH!

what's new in windows live 8.5?

speaking of typing sounds, I can't toggle between typing sounds, announcing, and total silence, when somone is replying in windows live. I know windows messenger is like, alt ctrl f12, or something, I forget, but I had it right at the time I tried it.

I'd appreciate you emailing them to me. I'll send you a PM with my email address in it.

I'd also be grateful for further suggestions from anybody else.

Thanks again.

To post 1, what version of Jaws are you using?
To post 2, same question.
Reason I ask, is if they are different versions, then the scripts may not work, if its newer to older, lets say, 9.0 to 7.0, then there's no easy way for you to make them work, unless you're good at taking out stuff that you know for sure doesn't work in the older version of Jaws.
Nice going, Freedomscientific.

at post 6: perhaps you should read more carefully. FM indicated that he is running version 7.00.135. My suggestion would be to revert back to the earlier version of live and save yourself all the hassle unless there is some new feature that you really want to run. I always look at what is new, and if there is nothing worth upgrading for, I don't bother. The latest isn't always the greatest. I'm sure fs will come out with something to fix some of these issues in the next release of jaws, but honestly, with their lawsuit against GWMicro and the fairly consistent downturn in quality of newer software, I'm thinking the next time I decide to get new software, I'll be going with window eyes.

To post 7:
Forgot about the original post, its called not being completely awake when writing it, my bad, and yes, I agree, I personally don't use windows live messenger.
I still use Windows Messenger, does enough, for my specific needs, and yes, am still using Jaws 7.
Can you give a working url for the FS vs GWMicro lawsuit, what its all about, and whose said what, if possible?

Windows Live Messenger works better with internet connections, but go for Miranda. -Dom

The Lil Dark Piggy, interesting nickname, first.
Second, Miranda is useful, and very accessible, only thing it doesn't do well is multiuser chats, no matter on which service you're on, such as google talk, msn, aim, yahoo, at least not accessibly with Jaws.

Miranda is excellent. Get the speak.dll file, and a sound pack, and your good to go with it. Again, the only issue, is multi user chats.

Is the merrandaa big file to download?

I've never heard of Miranda. Is it another messenger? Or something completely different?

I can't use an earlier version of Windows Live. I know that version 8.0 works with no hitches with Jaws 7, but Microsoft have built in a feature which demands you update to the latest version before you can sign in. There's a patch to stop it doing that, but the only url i could find was broken, so i can't get the patch. It's very frustrating!

Oh, and FM is definitely a she, last time I looked... *grin*

Well, if u consider 3 megs to be a big file then yup its big. :D Its a multi protocol instant messenger. So, lets say ya got contacts in aim, yahoo!, MSN, jabber, and u got some friends in IRC. Follow miranda's instructions, set up the servers, and bam u have a tiny little IM client for u to use. But, two things. Make sure u get a sound pack for it, because if not, your not gonna know anything that is going on in the program. Also, if u want miranda to speak to u, get the speak.dll file. It'll use your sappy voices, to announce whose online, whose sent u a message, and what they said in it, file transfers, al that wonderful stuff. The link for this little piece of software is
the huge miranda client
If you want the speak.dll file, send me a private message or quicknote, and I'll get it to ya. Don't do a google soearch for speak.dll, you'll find it, but theirs no download link.

Thanks very much for this. One final question though. Can it be switched to use Jaws rather than Sapi? I seem to recall seeing Jaws scripts for it a long long time in the dark and distant past, but i can't think where.

Yes, their r scripts for it. U can get those if u want them.
grab 'em right here
When u get the client from miranda-im.org, replace the clist_chat.dll file with clist_blind.dll. TO make this easier on yourself, get the scripts, then get the blind-geek-zone's version of miranda. Run the scripts for it, then go into your directory, and copy the clist_blind.dll file. Update your version of miranda, then replace the clist_blind.dll file. Delete the other clist_classic.dll file, as it won't do anything while clist_blind is in their.

There's a more up-to-date version of the clist_blind.dll on the Miranda IM website.
